/ GOOGLE: ANTITRUST ATTACK PARIS, VIOLA COMPETITION RULES
'VERY DOMINANT POSITION IN ADVERTISING' ON THE WEB '
PARIS (Paul Levi) (ANSA) - PARIS, Dec. 14 - Google ends up in the sights of the French competition, which accuses the web giant to occupy a "position strongly dominant "in advertising tied to Internet searches. Ground, the latter represents a real Wild West, as yet there are no rules. At the request of the government of President Nicolas Sarkozy, the antitrust Paris today published an opinion, in which are listed fourteen "concerns" fundamentals - a fact rather unusual for antitrust Alps - linked to the virtual monopoly of Google, which accounted for over 90% of internet users' searches. These concerns relate in particular to the exclusivity clauses in contracts with Google posted by its advertisers for sponsored links, and the privileged position service 'Google maps' in the search results, that is to the detriment of competitors. The Authority has not, however, called for a moment regulation of the sector, which could be an impediment to innovation, and did not order special investigations. Only an abuse of dominant position could trigger sanctions, says the gendarme of the competition, which for the moment can thus warn the U.S. giant. "Sponsored links are one of many alternatives for advertisers to gain publicity. If the price of the link increases, they will move towards other forms, on-line or not, and in fact do not hesitate to act in this way, "Google defends itself in a statement, adding: "This is proof that the industry is dynamic and competitive." The search engine also stressed that it provided all the necessary guarantees in relation to 'suspect' imputed. On 30 November, the European Commission announced an investigation on Google for abuse of dominant position, pointing in particular to its activities in online search and advertising associate. "The European Commission - explain antitrust Paris - is in the best position to gather the different points of view that are not only French but also British, German, Italian ...." Last spring, pressed by the Antitrust Authority of Rome, Google has made the first concession in the battle with the publishers on the search engine News, providing more autonomy in their choices about indexing of web pages and more transparency in advertising contracts.
